Avoiding heartbreak with the Palomar knot
This fishing tip was first published in the Winter, 2006 edition of the Salmon News, a free publication for all Oak Bay Marine Group guests.
When you set out to land a 60 lb. Chinook, you’ve got to be prepared. Anglers know that their gear is only as strong as its weakest link often, sadly, the knot.
The Palomar knot is very simple, and considered by many to be the strongest fishing knot known to mankind.

- Double-up about 10″ of line and pass it through the eye of your hook
- Tie a simple overhand knot in the doubled line, taking care to avoid twisting
- Pull the end of the loop down, passing it completely over your hook
- Spit on the knot before tightening to avoid a week spot
- Pull both ends of the line and cinch the knot
