Starting the Season with a Bang

Get a jump on the fishing season with some tips for fishing Langara Island in May and June.

learning to catch a langara island king salmonEarly June will be a great time for Chinook, but will indeed be a little early for any real numbers of Coho. There should be some very large Chinook around then.

Good numbers of fish in the 40 to 70 lb range have been taken in early June over the years, so make sure you’ve got everything ready to land a big fish before you put your rods in the water. It’s not easy to set the net up when you’ve got that fish of a lifetime at the business end of your rod!

My favorite spots for Chinook at Langara in early June are Coho Point, Andrews Point and Gunia Point. If the weather permits, the Lighthouse and Lacy Island are always consistent producers as well.

Some general tips to help get more Chinook:

For halibut, ask the fishmaster where he recommends catching them. Usually they’ll take you out and show you. Always fish halibut on a slack tide and always use halibut gear. There are plenty of halibut around in early June, but you’ll need to set aside an afternoon to get them as it’s usually a bit of a hunting game to find them. Once you do though, they’re easy to catch.
